Adding a Humminbird Sounder to an Ocean Kayak Prowler 13
Here I will show you how to install a Hummirdbird Sounder on an Ocean Kayak Prowler 13.
On most Ocean Kayak fishing kayaks you will find that they feature a transducer Scupper designed to suit the range of Humminbird Sounders. With the addition of an optional transducer boot kit is is an easy project to mount the transducer of the Humminbird Sounder to your kayak.
Using the Ocean Kayak transducer boot kit, Ocean Kayak Power cable and Ocean Kayak Adapter plate I installed my Humminbird 597 Sounder in record time. It takes about 30 minutes to complete the project.
Tools required for this project are a hex driver, a phillip head screw driver and a socket driver.
The first thing to do is to install the power cord for the Humminbird Sounder. When you first buy your Prowler 13 you will have a plano tackle tray installed on the console. If you take the tray away you will see a small rubber grommet protruding from the hull of the kayak. This is a pre-drilled hole for the purpose of installing the Ocean Kayak power cable into the hull of the kayak. On the Ocean Kayak Power cable you will notice that it has a rubber grommet installed already on the cable, take the small grommet out from under the tackle tray area, discard it and run the power cable through the existing hole. Position the grommet on the power cable so as there is enough left over cable so it can be installed on the hummingbird sounder mount.
The next step in this project is to install the transducer using the boot kit into the transducer scupper. The transducer cable is routed through the rubber boot and the transducer boot is assembled ready to attach to the transducer scupper. The transducer is held in place by a threaded rod that is attached to the transducer on the inner of the boot going up to the top of the scupper and held tightly by a nut and washer on the topside of the transducer scupper.
The next step is to mount the Humminbird Sounder mount onto the adapter plate. This is a plate that allows the sounder to be mounted to your kayak without the need to drill extra holes instead it uses the Water Proof Inserts which are already installed in the kayak hull.
The project is nearing the closing stages, the excess wiring of the transducer is wound up and place under the adapter plate, the battery is attached to the power cable inside the hull and then its time to test to see if it works.
