Adding a Scotty Rod Holders to an Ocean Kayak Prowler 13
The Ocean Kayak Prowler 13 comes with flush mount rod holders which are positioned behind the seated area of the kayak. These rod holders can be used for trolling a lure behind the kayak but most kayak fishermen use them for storage of their rods.
Forward of the console of an Ocean Kayak Prowler 13 there is an area made in the hull of the kayak for the purpose of mounting optional rod holders using the Ocean Kayak Waterproof Inserts. These inserts are unique to the Ocean Kayak Range and make installing accessories a quick and easy task.
These instruction will show you how to mount a single Scotty Powerlock Rod holder and a Scotty Triple mount bar which allows you to use up to three rod holders from the one rod holder mount.
Pictured below is the gear I need to install the rod holder, the only tool you need for this project is a hex screwdriver.
Installing the mount is the only thing required to have a rod holder on the Prowler in less than a minute. Look for the area where the rod holder is to be installed. It is forward of the console just behind the front storage hatch. It is the sunken area with the 4 visible waterproof inserts.
Tighten the screws firmly, do not over tighten. Once the rod holder is in place its just a matter of adding the Scotty Rod holder which can be swiveled to any angle on the mount or the locking nut on the holder can be loosened to allow movement up and down.
As I like to troll with sometimes up to two rods, I use a Scotty triple mount bar. like I said previously this allows up to three rod holders to be used at once. I also like the triple bar as is has slots along the bar to allow storage of my fishing scissors and pliers I like to have with me when fishing. Its just a matter of taking the rod holder out from the mount and installing the triple bar in its place. In my case I use the mounts at each opposing end to install my Scotty Powerlock Rod Holders. I do have a camera mount also and at times I have it installed in the spare centre mount if I ever want to take a picture of myself with a class fish.
