Schultz Canal, Nudgee, January 2008
Today myself and a few fellow kayakers from AKFF, headed up the canal
this morning.
We made our way up to the barge that is placed across the stream far up the canal, I sizeable distance I thought, most of us trolling on the way, however Gra was tow his new invention, a crab pot trailer.
Pete had the first hit of the morning with a tiny winy bream. Gra was testing his new crab pot trailer which was working extremely well on its maiden voyage.
Gra had two pots with him and set them on the way up to the barge. The paddlers were out in front and the pedellers just crept our way up.
Must of us had a stop short of the barge to let Wayne D do some hobie testing and Jim H continued on to the barge, I did soon after as well. I got to the barge to find Jim throwing Sx40's at the base of the barge and catching many bream with success. I started the same technique also and had a slow start but soon caught a New pb from a yak for me and the first real first for my new Revo, a 59 cm Flathead.
The others caught up trying the same technique to catch a few bream also. Gra continued on to his secret spot to score a 51 cm flatty.I turned up and hooked onto a massive stingray on my nuke chicken. We all trolled around way up past the barge for a while and then decided to head back. Gra continued on a bit further to discover new territory
On getting back to the barge again we all had a flick around for some breambos again and gra eventually came back to pick up his crab pot trailer he had anchored up.
The wind came up a bit at this point so the paddlers made for the ramp leaving us peddlers behind, Gra, Pete and myself set some lures for the run home. Again Gra was towing his trailer. Gra and I took it easy checking his first pot while Pete continued on past us. In Gra's first pot he found 3 crabs and 3 bream. The Mud crabs were just under size and were bucks but the bream was a good size about 28cm and fat.. Gra and I had fun trying to get the crabs and fish out of the net while drifting upstream. Again we set off to continue down to his last pot.
We were just about to check his pot when Pete calls out fish, I decide to go over and have a look but then he calls stingray so I went back over to Gra who was checking his pot which had two massive crabs inside but they were jennies Pete calls snapper That got my attention so I turn to see him landing a fish, I was 200 metres away and it looked huge in his net. Pete comes over to show with glee a massive bream, Pete was understandably stoked and I was so happy for him too. Took some great pics, put it on the lie detector,39cm, and after a long swim Pete let it go. Mean while we had all drifted into the mangroves, we untangled ourselves and headed back to the ramp to pack up.
It was an awesome day, great company as usual and we had a few fish to make it interesting,by this stage the wind had come up a fair bit, we all helped each other pack up and headed on our ways. Thanks guys, I had plenty of fun today and the usual laughs make it so great too. We must do that one again soon.
